Mason wasn’t born into the best family. Not only was she born into a not so wealthy family – they weren’t poor, but there’d still be some money left to eat out at the end of the month –, but also within the family itself there were a lot of problems. Her father was a workaholic and an alcoholic, absent for most of her life. And her mother, her sweet mother, had no other option but to bear with her husband’s absence and abuse for the sake of their only child.But everyone has a limit, and her mother was no exception. She felt that the only escape from his grip was to take her own life, leaving 15-year-old Mason in care of her father who, being the narcissistic that he is, never saw her death as his fault. To him it was their angel of a child who drove her to such bad ending. For the next following days, on the times where he’d look at her, he’d yell at her and guilt trip her into believing that she, the direct copy of her mother’s face, was guilty of this event. However, she knew better. Her mother taught her to never reply to his words of gestures or she’d make it worse. Instead, despite her father’s orders not to do so, she packed her things and left to move in with her aunt, his sister, who was the opposite of him and immediately took her in her arms. To guarantee that her niece was safe and that there was no way that her father could disturb Mason’s newfound peace, she took him to court, winning full custody of her while her parent had to pay for child support.She hated to admit, but all her father’s manipulation started growing on her. The strong part of her knew he was fully at fault, but the fragile part of her, who was slowly growing even larger, felt like she was the biggest cause of her death. And as she settled in her aunt’s place, she started looking for ways to cope with her death. Sure, her aunt got her a nice therapist, but she felt like it wasn’t enough. She needed something that’d guarantee some sort of physical effect on her body that wouldn’t leave permanent scars on her. It started as tasting a beer with her best friend from middle school cause his parents allowed it, to sneakily tasting some of their stronger drinks whenever they’d have a sleepover at his place, or even taste some of her aunt’s drinks, both alone and with him. It’s sometimes said that little girls inherit their mothers’ looks and their fathers’ worst traits, and that’s what happened to Mason, cause at that moment she found how much she loved strong drinks. At this age, she’d control herself because she knew the consequences of her actions if her aunt ever found out.Her passion was found a year later, at the concert of the local band when she was focused on the drummer. At that moment she promised herself that she’d buy her own drum set, which she did after working for months at her aunt’s company every day after school. With her new instrument and some money on the side, she taught herself how to play it and the results were shown by her getting recognized for her talent and even getting gigs here and there, eventually joining an actual band.Except Mason wasn’t one of universe’s favorites, because she also lost her aunt at the age of 18 after she got lung cancer with no chance of survival, despite all the treatments. She was alone in this country besides for her estranged father, who tried to make her move back with him, but she was fine to live on her own with the money that she was earning and the one she inherited. Her aunt dying was the breaking point for her. She filled her body with tattoos and started drinking excessively to the point where her best friend had to put her in rehab.Completely clean after two years, she returned to fully focus on the brighter side of her life, spending time with her loved ones and not allowing her fragile side to take the best of her.
